Protein Power

You probably know you need to eat Protein, but what is it?
Take away the water and about 75 percent of your weight is protein. Protein is found throughout the body. It's in muscle, bone, skin, hair and virtually every other body part or tissue. It makes up the enzymes that power many chemical reactions and the hemoglobin that carries oxygen in your blood. At least 10,000 different proteins make you what you are and keep you that way.
Protein builds up, maintains, and replaces the tissues in your body. Your body uses the protein you eat to make lots of specialized protein molecules that have specific jobs. Whether you're running or just hanging out, protein is doing important work like moving your legs and protecting you from disease. Protein malnutrition leads to the condition known as kwashiorkor. Lack of protein can cause growth failure, loss of muscle mass, decreased immunity, weakening of the heart and respiratory system, and death.

All Protein isn't alike
Many foods contain protein, but the best sources are beef, poultry, fish, eggs, dairy products, nuts, seeds and legumes like black beans. Protein from animal sources, such as meat and milk, is called complete, because it contains all nine of the essential amino acids. Most vegetable protein is considered incomplete because it lacks one or more of the essential amino acids. This can be a concern for someone who doesn't eat meat or milk products. |
